My Dad grew up in NYC in the 70s and more often than not Studio 54 makes its way into the conversation.
For those who might not know (and thank god you now know!!), Studio 54 was a theatre turned nightclub that became the place to be and be seen. It was a disco club full of A-list stars and fabulous New Yorkers looking for a great time. On May 2, 1977 Bianca Jagger famously sat on a white horse in Studio 54 only helping to further its iconic reputation.
Studio 54 marks a time when NYC was brimming with artists who could actually afford to live there. From my perspective, the 70s and 80s in NYC were unlike any other. I often mourn that I wasn’t alive in its heyday. The gritty arts scene in New York was what I came for but when I arrived in 2012, it was a much more clean and bare version of what it once was. There is still a lot I love about the city but it’s different and Studio 54 is the perfect representation of what I always hoped it would be.
As I looked through photos of people dancing at Studio 54, I couldn’t help but be inspired by what they were wearing. They arrived ready to make a statement. Studio 54 provided the permission to be the most authentic versions of themselves.
I have never dressed up how they did to go to a nightclub. It was always tight and short dresses or skirts. Very traditional, and frankly, very boring. I lament my lack of flair. So, I asked Sylvia to create a look that she’d want me to wear if I had gone to Studio 54. Here is what she came up with.

Any fashion lover knows the influence of the Studio 54 era. I daydream about going back in time and being a fly on the wall to see the notorious parties. The fashion alone was iconic and knew no limits. When you think of the fashion of Studio 54, you think of gold lamé, sequins, vibrant colors, and eye-catching materials. When searching for pieces online to create an outfit for Katerina, I wanted to gravitate towards images that were recognizable to the era. I chose pieces that are 70s inspired in their silhouette, colors, and textures. I would love to see Katerina dressed in platform boots and an amazing long fur coat sweeping the floor. Maybe we will do a look like this in the future, but for now, enjoy our take on Studio 54.
